The L.A. Metropolitan Transit system recently upgraded their fleet of buses with new and more efficient engines that run cleaner and get better fuel efficiency. As part of their mission to transition to a zero-emission electric transportation service, they were looking for a solution that would help them make their existing gas-powered fleet more fuel efficient, thereby reducing their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
With help from Orange County Thermal Industries, L.A. Metro redesigned their exhaust piping after realizing their current exhaust was not getting hot enough to burn off soot and maintain a constant operating temperature that would provide adequate power to the buses. Without a consistent high temperature, the buses would be at risk of no longer meeting emission regulations and increase pollution in the city.
Our team was excited to use our 3D modeling technology to create a mold press that would replicate the exhaust pipe. This allowed our team to improve our design and create a metal encapsulated removable heat shield with an elevated temperature fiber filler. Team OCTI was able to manufacture a custom-fit heat shield for every upgraded bus in their fleet.
Our custom metal shielding helped control the exhaust temperature and reduced radiant heat to provide protection to nearby wire harnesses that could potentially cause engine failure if damaged. Controlled exhaust temperatures reduce pollution by lowering the emissions released by the buses which allowed them to remain within safe industry regulations and requirements.
