DPF Insulation at Verizon

Verizon Wireless invested millions of dollars to provide expanded network coverage and offer new wireless services to residents and businesses in Southern California. As part of their improvement plan, they installed a fleet of diesel-powered backup generators in the region. Along with the generators, Verizon Wireless installed diesel particulate filters (DPF) in order to comply with California’s stringent emissions regulations for reducing smog and air pollution. DPF units trap harmful diesel exhaust particles and must regularly be accessed for cleaning and maintenance to ensure proper performance.

The Challenge

Located on top of a nearby building, one of their generator-DPF installations was emitting excessive heat. Along with being a fire hazard, the high temperatures put maintenance crews in danger of being injured by contact burns from overheated equipment surfaces. Called to the installation site, we assessed the situation and developed a heat protection solution to solve this problem quickly because of an impending city inspection.

The Solution

We designed and manufactured the removable thermal insulation blanket to protect both the equipment and maintenance workers.

By taking the time to make accurate measurements and then leveraging the power of our CAD design software, we manufactured this one-piece thermal insulation blanket to fit precisely.

We also configured it with elements to facilitate removal when maintenance became a need.

The Outcome

Constructed to UL 2200 and UL 723 standards, it is very straightforward and simple for maintenance staff to remove and replace the insulated blanket, which provides the security of knowing that the DPF is always completely covered and protected. Verizon Wireless was very impressed with our fast response and high-quality workmanship.
