Freeze Protection for Backflow Preventers at NEISD
We worked with a large school district to provide removable thermal insulation blankets for backflow preventers. When there is a drop in water pressure, backflow preventers protect the water supply by ensuring no contaminated water can be sucked back in. Without thermal insulation, backflow preventers run the risk of being damaged by freezing temperatures and malfunctioning, leading to water pollution.

The Challenge
North East Independent School District (NEISD), one of the largest school districts in San Antonio, Texas, was in need of an insulation product that would protect backflow preventers throughout their district from freezing temperatures. They were experiencing issues with their existing insulation because once it was removed for annual inspections, it was difficult to place back on, causing it to not function properly the following year. They reached out to Team OCTI for a solution.
The Solution
Team OCTI provided custom-engineered thermal insulation blankets for each backflow preventer. This required specific measurements and designs to ensure the insulation fit to the exact specs, eliminating the risk of condensation that may cause rust and protection against extreme temperatures. Using our Summus 500, OCTI manufactured each thermal insulation blanket to form to every specific backflow preventer for main water, fire, and irrigation lines. Our team traveled to each backflow site and took measurements since each backflow is different. We design our products in a way that makes it easier for the customer to remove and replace.
The Outcome
During the Texas freeze of 2021, all of the backflow preventers fitted with removable thermal insulation blankets from OCTI did not freeze or sustain damage. The equipment not yet equipped with industrial insulation were damaged by the freezing temperatures. Now, Team OCTI works closely with and is part of the new construction projects that include backflow preventers needed by NEISD. Because the thermal insulation blankets allow for easy removal, their maintenance teams can quickly remove them for inspections, repairs, and routine maintenance without worrying about compromising the integrity of the insulation. We’re proud that our removable thermal insulation blankets have become a standard for this district.
