Thermal Insulation Blankets to Improve Turbine Performance
Team OCTI provided thermal insulation solutions to one of the largest microturbine manufacturers in the world to improve the performance of the turbines while protecting electrical elements and sensors from direct or radiant heat. The company offers a comprehensive lineup of microturbines that are scalable from 10 kW to 30 MW and can operate on a variety of gaseous or liquid fuels including: natural gas, associated gas, LPG/propane, flare gas, landfill gas, digester gas, diesel, aviation fuel and kerosene.

The Challenge
When the microturbine manufacturer was in need of a better insulation solution, they reached out to OCTI. We recognized their need to protect electrical elements from excessive heat for their customers. As a manufacturing partner, we would need to commit to the aggressive production demands required as well as be an active partner with them in support of product development, UL certification, and quality assurance.
Having worked with this client previously on other projects, we had knowledge of their industry, application needs and regulations. While we did produce other products, we were not their primary insulation blanket provider. So once we received the request and specs, our engineering and design department got to work immediately to provide them with a solution.
The Solution
OCTI was asked to create a robust product line to meet the specifications required. The solution was hybrid blankets that combined metal with rugged fabric portions in support of the five different microturbines that they produce. We fused our metal shielding with our soft blanket technology and created an elegant, rugged solution that we could use on all microturbine sizes. Each system was insulated with OCTI Blankets and then placed in a test cell to capture performance information. Once performance was captured, the company prepared the turbine for shipment to their customer.
The Outcome
OCTI was able to meet the product design the manufacturer was looking for within the provided timeline. The microturbine manufacturer has since partnered with OCTI as their exclusive partner to produce all insulation blankets for each size of microturbines they make.
